The Fender Bassman, originally designed in 1952 as a bass amplifier, became an iconic piece of equipment cherished by guitarists worldwide. By the mid-1960s, the black-panel version of the Bassman had evolved into a 50-watt tube amplifier head, delivering rich tones that made it a staple for rock, blues, and punk musicians. While its earlier tweed iterations influenced Jim Marshall’s groundbreaking amp designs, the 1965 Bassman carved its niche as a versatile, affordable, and powerful workhorse for guitarists during the 1970s and 80s.
Famous for its use by Kurt Cobain on Nirvana’s Nevermind, the Bassman’s gritty and bold tones helped define the raw energy of grunge music. Punk, garage, and rock players also gravitated toward this amp, drawn by its capability to deliver sparkling cleans, thick overdrives, and a unique midrange crunch when pushed to its limits.
This particular 1965 Bassman head retains much of its original charm, though like all vintage amps, it will have had various parts changed to remain functional. Therefore, this is sold as – and priced as – a fantastic and affordable player’s vintage amp, which is not only a piece of gera history but also works as it should and sounds fantastic.
