The 2001 Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz Bass is a faithful tribute to one of the most influential bassists in modern music history. Known for his groundbreaking work with Weather Report, Joni Mitchell, and as a solo artist, Jaco Pastorius redefined the role of the electric bass in jazz, fusion, and beyond. He famously played a defretted Fender Jazz Bass, achieving his signature singing fretless tone that remains a benchmark to this day. This Custom Shop model honors his legacy with meticulous craftsmanship and a fantastic relic finish.
The Fender Jazz Bass debuted in 1960 as Leo Fender’s follow-up to the Precision Bass, offering a slimmer neck profile, offset body design, and dual single-coil pickups. Its brighter, more articulate sound quickly became a favorite among bassists across genres. Jaco’s relationship with the Jazz Bass began in the early 1970s when he modified his instrument by removing the frets and applying epoxy to the rosewood fingerboard, creating his iconic fretless sound. This custom modification allowed him to produce expressive glissando, harmonics, and percussive attacks that revolutionized bass playing.
This particular 2001 Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Relic Jazz Bass replicates Jaco’s worn-in, heavily modified instrument, including the fingerboard being treated with an additional epoxy lacquer, which not only enhances the tone but also contributes to its smooth, glass-like playability. Weight is 4300g. The bass includes its original case and Certificate of Authenticity (COA).
