Tone King was founded by amplifier designer Mark Bartel in 1993. The company became known for American vintage-inspired valve amplifiers, particularly the Imperial, together with its Ironman reactive-load attenuation technology. The Falcon was developed during Bartel’s period as Tone King’s lead designer and was introduced as a smaller, simpler alternative to the company’s larger models.
The original Falcon is a 12-watt, single-channel 1×10″ valve combo built around a pair of 6V6 output valves. Unlike a conventional pentode 6V6 output stage, the Falcon runs its power valves cathode-biased in an ultralinear configuration. It was designed around the character of smaller American amplifiers from the 1950s and early 1960s, including tweed Fender, Supro and early Gibson-style circuits.
Its controls are deliberately straightforward, with Volume and Tone joined by a three-position Voicing control. Rhythm is the cleaner, more blackface-influenced setting, Tweed provides a thicker vintage-style response and progressively more overdrive, while Lead adds considerably more gain and is intended primarily for driven sounds. Much of the Falcon’s overdrive character comes from driving the 6V6 output stage rather than relying on a separate preamp gain circuit.
One of its most useful features is the built-in Ironman attenuator. This sits between the output stage and speaker and uses transformer coupling with a tuned reactive load, allowing the output valves to be driven hard while reducing actual speaker volume over six attenuation settings.
This example is fitted with an Eminence Patriot Ragin Cajun 10″ speaker and is finished in black with a cream front panel. It is in good condition with only minor standard scuffs from use and works perfectly.
